Meadow Brown

Maniola jurtina

The meadow brown is a medium-sized, common butterfly that can be seen flying quite low to the ground over plants in summer in a few different environments, such as gardens and grassland.

Females use multiple species of grass to lay their eggs on.

It can be easily confused with the Gatekeeper butterfly, which has more orange colouration on the wings.
