Fringed Cup Lichen

Cladonia fimbriata

Fringed cup lichen Cladonia fimbriata grows among the mosses on the Devonian Red Sandstone boulders.

Its fruit bodies are borne on cup-shaped structures (podetia) resembling minute golf tees – on some Cladonia species vivid red fruiting bodies in the podetia make the lichen look like matchsticks.

Some Cladonia species have recently been found to contain substances that might contribute to a cure for the prion protein induced “Mad Cow” disease.
