Small Tortoiseshell

Aglais urticae

The small tortoiseshell is a common, medium-sized butterfly that can be seen for most of the year.

The undersides of its wings are dull and make the butterfly look almost like a dead leaf when its wings are closed, keeping it camouflaged.

Look out for its caterpillars on nettles.

Look out for them all over the Botanic Garden.
