Dr Helen Matthews

Trustee and Vice Chair

Helen was appointed the Board’s Vice-Chair in November 2022.

Born and raised in Wales, Helen qualified as a doctor in Cardiff before specialising as a psychiatrist in London.

From 1998 until her retirement in 2019, Helen was a Consultant Psychiatrist at Hywel Dda University Health Board. Her exemplary professional leadership culminated in her being elected as vice-president of the Royal College of Psychiatrists.

As an expert in complex mental illness, autism and learning disabilities, she has held many advisory roles to the Welsh Government and was an Honorary Senior Lecturer within Swansea Medical School. She has focused on the development of community-based services, including in her native Welsh language, and is particularly interested in developing the Botanic Garden from the perspectives of emotional wellbeing, mental health and disability.

Helen and her family live in the Tywi Valley.
