Blue morpho butterfly

Morpho peleides

Visible now

The dazzling colour of blue morpho wings is a trick of light

This is created by layers of scales which don’t have a blue pigment.

Try and look at the wings from different angles and you’ll see how the blue colours shimmer.

Under the wing is very different. When the butterfly is resting, its brown colour provides good camouflage in the South American rainforests.

Leave Me Alone!

Large eye markings on the underwings scare off predators.

You can find this butterfly in Plas Pilipala.
