There are several types of buttercup on Waun Las. This type, which has hairy leaves and stems, has a curious number of petals.
All buttercups have five petals. But creeping buttercup, which can live for hundreds of years, mutates as it grows older, producing six or seven petalled flowers. So where you see lots of these mutants, it suggests the meadow hasn’t been ploughed for a very long time.
