Creeping Buttercup

Ranunculus repens

look for 6 or 7 petal mutations in our hay meadows

There are several types of buttercup on Waun Las. This type, which has hairy leaves and stems, has a curious number of petals.

All buttercups have 5 petals. But creeping buttercup, which can live for hundreds of years, mutates as it grows older, producing 6 or 7 petalled flowers. So where you see lots of these mutants, it suggests the meadow hasn’t been ploughed for a very long time.
