King Protea

Protea cynaroides

Visible now

Large, heavy flower

The protea is a genus of plants almost exclusive to Southern Africa (one species occurs on Mount Kenya).

Many are exquisite in bloom and are now an international flower crop grown for the cut-flower industry.

The King protea is the national floral emblem of The Republic of South Africa. We are fortunate at the Garden to have some wonderful mature specimens that flower regularly in the Great Glasshouse.
