Our Lord’s Candle

Hesperoyucca whipplei

Our Lord’s Candle is entirely dependent on the yucca moth for producing new seeds. The moth lays its egg in the flower’s ovary and the larvae feeds on pollen. This is the only way the yucca species can be naturally fertilised.

The spectacular tall flowers of our Lord’s Candles took a few years to appear but now they are an annual treat.
