Sara Longwing

Heliconius sara

Longwings have a great survival technique

Their body and wing colours mimic those of poisonous bugs that live in their tropical forest habitat. The butterflies may not be poisonous but predators don’t know that – they leave them alone.

We have several species of longwing in Plas Pilipala, like this Sara longwing each with their own distinctive mimicking colours.

Hot and Steamy

Sara longwings live halfway up the canopy and on the edges of the Amazon rainforest.
