Waxcaps

Hygrocybe spp.

On Waun Las NNR, there is a hillside where 23 species of waxcap have been recorded. These multi-coloured, sometimes fragrant mushrooms have become increasing rare in the Welsh countryside as they cannot tolerate fertilisers and ploughing.

But waxcaps thrive on Waun Las’ sheep and cattle grazed organically managed fields, and on some of the Garden’s lawns. Wales is the best country in the world to see waxcap-rich grasslands.
