Head of Horticulture, Learning and Nature
Don Murray is Head of Horticulture, Learning and Nature at the National Botanic Garden of Wales, where he leads the Garden’s horticulture, learning, landscape, farm and nature-focused work. He brings over 35 years’ experience across botanical gardens, heritage landscapes, contemporary horticulture and major visitor destinations.
Don has held senior leadership roles at several nationally and internationally recognised organisations, including the Eden Project, Garden Organic, The Newt in Somerset and Mount Stuart Trust. His career has also included work at Birmingham Botanical Gardens and Glasshouses, Marie Selby Botanical Gardens in Florida, and the University of Missouri, where he worked on tropical tree canopy research.
At the National Botanic Garden of Wales, Don is involved in shaping the future of the living collections, horticultural standards, learning programmes, landscape management, biodiversity, sustainability and partnerships. His work connects plants, people and place, with a strong focus on conservation, climate resilience, lifelong learning and public engagement. Don holds an MSc in Plant Taxonomy from the University of Reading and is a Fellow of both the Chartered Institute of Horticulture and the Linnean Society of London. He is also a Director of the Bute Community Land Company and a member of the RSPB Wales Advisory Committee.
