Science Centre

This Science Centre houses our science laboratories, library, archives, herbarium and the National Seed Bank of Wales.

Our Science team carries out research to benefit the conservation of plants, pollinators and habitats in Wales and across the world. The DNA barcoding of plants is a key research area and our expertise is recognised internationally. Several collections are also housed within the Science Centre:

  • National Seed Bank of Wales: we are helping to conserve Wales’ flora by collecting, cleaning, drying then storing seeds of every native Welsh plant species.
  • Our herbarium contains preserved plant and fungi specimens collected as part of our scientific research, a collection of every native plant in Wales and the James Cosmo Melvill collection of UK plants.
  • Our library contains over 7,000 botanical and mycological books and our archives cover the Garden’s history.

Our Education team are also based in the Science Centre and the Garden’s Stitching Botanical Group meet here once a month.

The Science Centre is not open to visitors apart from special event days.
