The rise, fall and rise again of the Middleton Hall Estate has taken place over four centuries in tandem with the fortunes of its owners. Its history tracks the social and political movements of modern Britain but it is also a personal story of the people associated with it. The story of Middleton is a narrative of 17th century East India Company “adventurers” and privateers, Civil War Royalists, bankruptcy and imprisonment, service at court, a society beauty and literary muse, an Indian-derived fortune and enslavement in the West Indies, followed by suffragists and starter farms, until finally in the 21st century, the site became the home of the National Botanic Garden of Wales.

This book has been written by volunteers and edited by Sara Fox.
