Scientific collections

Scientific collections are a vital and valuable resource for researchers.

They include both our living collection of plants, specimens housed in the herbarium and library, and our online database of DNA barcodes. Housed in our Science Centre is the Garden’s library, archives and herbarium.

  • National Seed Bank of Wales

With around one in five plant species threatened with extinction worldwide, seed banking is a crucial conservation tool.

  • Herbarium

The Garden’s herbarium houses our pressed plant specimens, including specimens relating to our scientific research.

  • Barcode UK

Our DNA barcoding collection, covering 1,479 UK native flowering plant species, provides a valuable resource for researchers by allowing the identification of plant species from the smallest fragment of leaf, pollen or root.

  • Library and archives

The Garden’s library contains over 2,000 botanical and mycological books, with archives that cover over 400 years of history.
