With around one in five plant species threatened with extinction worldwide, seed banking is a crucial conservation tool.
The Millennium Seed Bank (MSB), run by the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew, has led the way in global seed conservation and has made remarkable progress in banking seeds from the UK flora. However, a large number of Welsh native plant species are yet to be seed banked from Welsh-origin material.
To address this, we are establishing a National Seed Bank of Wales in our Science Centre. Collaborating with the Millennium Seed Bank as an official partner organisation, we are increasing the range and genetic diversity of Welsh native plants that have been seed banked.
Our seed bank labs are equipped to dry, clean and store seeds long-term for future conservation and restoration uses.
Seed collection trips to date have included botanically diverse sites like The Great Orme and Kenfig National Nature Reserve.
