Five Week Practical Beekeeping Course
- Tuesday 16 May 2023
- 10am to 3:30pm
We are pleased to announce that we have two hands-on, five-week beekeeping courses.
The second course starts on Tuesday, May 16 and runs 10am-3.30pm every Tuesday for five weeks, ending on June 13.
The course will cover all aspects of beekeeping and is very much hands-on. Basic theory involved in keeping bees is provided, along with other useful information you’ll need to start this fascinating and rewarding hobby.
On completion of the course, candidates will be able to physically inspect a colony of bees, identifying the various types of bee, understand what is being observed during the inspections and know what actions, if any, need to be taken to maintain a healthy colony.
Theory sessions will take place in one of the teaching rooms in the Garden and practical sessions will be at one of our two apiary sites within the Botanic Garden estate. Bee suits and gloves will be provided and it is recommended that sturdy outdoor boots/wellingtons are worn.
The course is run by Botanic Garden beekeeper Martin Davies, who has been keeping bees for more than 10 years and maintains the 20+ colonies here at the Garden as well as 20 of his own.
Martin has won beekeeping awards at both the Royal Welsh Show and the National Honey Show in recent years and is enthusiastic about passing on his knowledge to others.
Cost of the course is £175 per person.
Booking is essential for this course.
