Celebrate the longest night and welcome the returning light.
Join us at the National Botanic Garden of Wales for a magical Winter Solstice Gathering, celebrating the turning of the seasons, the beauty of the natural world, and the quiet promise of new beginnings.
Gather with us at the stone circle next to Broadwalk, as we honour the stillness of winter, connect with nature, and welcome the gradual return of the light. We’ll come together to mark this ancient seasonal turning point with simple rituals, creativity, reflection, and a little winter magic.
Our Winter Solstice activities
Burn a Yule Log
Release what no longer serves you and make space for new beginnings. Write down what you wish to let go of on small scraps of paper and offer them to the flames in a symbolic act of release and renewal.
Feed the Wildlife
Celebrate the creatures who share our winter landscape by decorating an outdoor tree with wildlife-friendly treats, such as edible garlands, fruit slices, and peanut-butter pinecones. A small act of kindness for nature during the coldest season.
Make Your Own Lantern
Create a simple paper lantern to illuminate the darkness, then take a gentle night-time walk and enjoy the peaceful beauty of the garden as evening falls.
Craft Natural Crowns
Create beautiful seasonal crowns using natural materials and plants steeped in folklore, such as holly and ivy. Explore the symbolism of these evergreen plants and their enduring connection to winter traditions.
Reflect, Release & Set Intentions
Embrace the stillness of the longest night with quiet journaling, meditation, and personal reflection. Consider what you are ready to leave behind, what you wish to nurture, and the hopes and intentions you want to carry into the returning light and the new season.
As the year reaches its darkest point, let’s pause, reconnect with the rhythms of nature, and remember that even in the deepest winter, the light will return.
Come as you are, bring your winter spirit, and join us in welcoming the turning of the wheel.
